Avondrood is a boutique cellar run by the Van Rensburg family who shares a passion for their land and wine. The farm was established as the prime estate it is today by Nicolaas Christoffel van Rensburg (1923 – 1990) who was born on a farm near George in the Southern Cape. Nicolaas was a teacher and a great rugby player. He played for SWD and was part of the Springbok rugby trials in 1951. He later married Eljoh van der Merwe and in December 1959 they bought this farm and called it Avondrood – denoting the beautiful pink-red sunsets above the mountains. With hard work and enthusiasm he built the farm to a prosperous wine farm, with the grapes delivered to Louwshoek Cellar.
